UGG x AMBUSH, No Love Lost

No Love Lost presents vignettes of typical days for members of the eponymous band as they freak out, fall in love, and run afoul of wardrobe regulations via decidedly nonstandard school uniform footwear courtesy of UGG and AMBUSH. I worked with Director Xavier Tera on creating titles and credits that would launch each vignette and establish tone—as it turns out, somewhat by contrast.

Originally I was thinking more like what the band would make as their own logo: notebook drawings (or backpack with wite-out) but later we found out it needed to be in katakana, and then the challenge became imparting some energy to a pretty blocky sequence of characters, so it was Pentel Pocket Brush, as often, to the rescue. In both approaches I was picturing the band as trying to put forward a cooler/edgier aspirational image than the reality as it unfolds in the vignettes, so aggressive brushstrokes and cherry red felt about right.

I aimed to balance amateurishness and exuberance with polish, in such a way that nothing felt contrived or deliberate—and splitting the/a difference between 90s Japanese TV and American movie styles.

For the credits, flat-out and keeping the red was the natural move. Sometimes, especially toward the end of a project, you don’t even have to think and just know what to do and that’s usually a good sign that the whole thing is cohering—it’s its own thing.

This was one of my favorite projects, until the second UGG/AMBUSH collaboration came along!
